Emma Jean Appleby Dean, 72, of Berea, affectionally known to everyone as Mrs. Claus because of her participation in the Berea Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade for over 20 years, took her final sleigh ride to her Heavenly Home on Saturday, July 20, 2024, from the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. Jean was a Burkesville, KY native born May 9, 1952, daughter of the late Fred Leon and Ava Ruth Thomas Appleby, and a Berea resident most of her life.

Jean completed a B.S. in Social Work from Eastern Kentucky University, Class of 1991 and was an employee of Goodwill Industries International. She was a dedicated member of Berea United Methodist Church (having participated in Methodist Mission Teams to Coast Rica and Honduras), Berea Lions Club, Berea Chamber of Commerce and AORBS (Amalgamated Order of Real Bearded Santa’s, an International Organization for real bearded Santa’s, Mrs. Santa’s and Elves).

Survivors include her loving husband of 20 years, Norman “Butch” Dean, Jr.; daughters Cindy Davis (Eric), Melinda Barrineau, Joy Dean, Jessica Ward (James); siblings Jerry Appleby (Linda), Freddy Appleby, Barney Appleby, Carolyn Chatfield; 5 grandchildren Leon, Cheyenne, Caitlyn, Jaden, Aiden; 2 great-granddaughters; as well as numerous relatives, friends and church family.

In accordance with Jean’s wishes, she was cremated, and a Christmas Themed Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 PM Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Berea United Methodist Church. Acceptance of Friends 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the church. Potluck meal to follow the service in Parish House.
