Berea resident wins 30-minute flight over Madison County

Posted

A Berea resident won a 30-minute flight over Madison County, where they will be allowed to operate flight controls under the supervision of a pilot instructor.

The raffle took place at the Berea Lions Club meeting on Dec. 9 where guest speaker Ryan Thompson, flight instructor and owner of Kilroy Aviation who will be supervising the flight, drew the winning ticket.

The winner was Marvin Welch of Berea. The flight will take place sometime this year.

At the meeting, Thompson spoke about Discovery Flight, a program designed to get high school students interested in becoming pilots and introduce the possibility of a career in aviation.

"There are other jobs beside pilots and mechanics, such as operators, dispatch, safety jobs, inspectors,” Thompson said. He also mentioned past students who had gone on to become flight instructors.

He said that seeing the excitement of kids who participated in a Discovery Flight was one of his favorite aspects of the job. He also mentioned that there is a growing number of students attending the flight school.

Thompson's flying service is located at the Central Kentucky Regional airport near Richmond. The program is open to people of all ages.

He also mentioned that he is passionate about growing aviation in the state of Kentucky and wants to build a flight school in Richmond, KY, and develop a local airplane repair facility. Some of Thompson’s other interests are community events, fundraising, and non-profit events.

Thompson is currently enrolled as a full-time student at Somerset College studying the field of 'A&P' (Airframe & Power plant) service. Those interested in the Discovery Flight Program may call him at 859-693-7442.
