Betty Jean Brockman

Betty Jean Brockman, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, left this world to begin her eternal journey on Sept. 21, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on Jan. 20, 1952, in the close-knit community of Berea, Kentucky, she was a beacon of light and warmth all her life and left this world in the same town that she called home.

Betty’s early years in Jackson County set the foundation for a life lived with diligence and compassion. She entered the workforce at age 19 and devoted many years of service to Dresser Industries until her retirement. After retirement from Dresser, she earned her associate’s degree in business. Her professional dedication was only matched by her devotion to her family, her invigorating spirit of generosity, and her love for Jesus.

Though preceded in death by her loving parents, Jack and Beulah Tussey Abney, and siblings, Lola Roe, Russell Abney, Charlie Abney, and Johnnie Abney, Betty’s legacy continues through her adoring family. She was the proud mother of Darren (Denna) Brockman and Kandy McNew, and she relished her role as Nannie to her four grandchildren, Erica, Chase, Lane, and Elise. Betty was also a beloved sister to Jackie (Charles) Lakes and Lonnie (Tina) Abney, and a sister-in-law to Maxine Abney.

Beyond her family life, Betty was an active and valued member of the New Vision Missionary Baptist Church. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence and she embraced her church community with open arms and an open heart. Betty also found joy in her frequent visits to the YMCA, where she cultivated lasting friendships and remained vibrant and engaged in her community activities.

Her commitment to service was reflected in her regular contributions to the local blood bank. Betty believed in giving back to her community, and her repeated blood donations were a testament to her giving nature.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Glenn Whittemore officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Jackson County. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
