Mrs. Peggy Auxier Leake, age 86, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Baptist Health – Richmond.

Mrs. Leake, the daughter of the late James and Josephine Badgett Auxier, was born in Paintsville, Kentucky on May 6, 1940. She was an Elementary School Teacher for the Estill County Board of Education and member of the United Methodist congregation. She had a special place in her heart for children, and her gift for teaching them was evident whether in the classroom or the Sunday School room. Beyond the walls of the church, Peggy was a gifted and creative soul. Her love of the arts expressed itself through her needlework and crafts, and she was a talented seamstress whose careful handiwork reflected both patience and precision. As a homemaker, devoted mother and grandmother, she created a warm and welcoming home filled with love, and her skill in the kitchen was known to all — her cooking was a source of comfort and joy for family and friends alike. She was also an avid University of Kentucky Wildcats fan who faithfully cheered on the Cats through the years.

Music was also a central thread woven throughout her life. She served faithfully as Director of the Choir at her church. Her dedication to her faith also found expression in her many years of service as a Sunday School Teacher. She also had the distinct honor of teaching The Ladies Sonshine Group, sharing her wisdom, faith, and warmth with ladies who have remained friends until this day.

On April 22, 1988, Peggy united in marriage to Francis Raymond “F.R.” Leake who preceded her in death on December 23, 2023, after 35 years of marriage.

Survivors include her daughter: Mary (& Charles) Bowling, two sons: Brent (& Lorah) Shackelford and Greg Shackelford all of Richmond, four grandchildren:  Ashley Wiseman, Sarah Shackelford, Nicholas (& Mariah) Bowling and Jake Shackelford, three great grandchildren: Keegan and Kamryn Layne, Lilith Ann Bowling and one-on-the-way, her brother: Thomas A. (& Sylvia) Auxier, two sisters: Patricia A. Auxier and Mary Jane (& John) Nelson and her nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, Peggy was preceded in death by her brother, James Larry Auxier.

The family has chosen private services with burial in the Madison County Memorial Gardens.
