Roy Lee McCollum, a steadfast pillar of his community and a beacon of
faith, passed away peacefully on Sept. 7, 2025, in Lexington,
at the age of 73. Born on Aug. 23, 1952, in Berea, Roy's life
was a testament to the values of hard work, devotion to family, and
unwavering faith.
Roy's journey began as the cherished son of the late Roy and Mildred
McCollum and the brother to Marcella Coffey, who preceded him in
death. His legacy continues through his loving family, including his
children, Marvin (April) McCollum and Roy Edward McCollum; his adored
grandchildren, Austin, Jacob McCollum, Nick (Chelsea) McCollum,
Adrianna (Brad) Rucker, Trenton, Ashton, and Harley McCollum; and his
six great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.
He is also fondly remembered by his siblings, Johnny (Carol) McCollum,
Robby (Gina) McCollum, Mary (Bobby) Smith, and Rita (Joe) McIntosh,
and his girlfriend Deborah Mason, as well as a host of friends.
Roy's professional life was marked by dedication and excellence,
beginning with an early job in facility management at Eastern Kentucky
University. He spent 24 years of his public work life at Parker Seals
in Berea until its closing, where he was not only a respected
colleague but also a mentor and friend to many.
A devout Christian, Roy's faith was the cornerstone of his existence.
He was actively involved in church activities, where he shared his
wisdom and compassion with all those around him. His love for the Lord
was evident in every aspect of his life, from his kindness to his
commitment to service.
Roy's passions extended beyond his work and faith. He was an avid
horseman, finding solace and joy in riding and working with horses as
well as the relationships it fostered. His happiest moments were those
spent with his grandchildren, whether it was teaching them to fish or
simply enjoying their company. Roy Lee could always be counted on for
a lively story, memory, or opinion that would leave you laughing or
reflecting. Roy's life reflected the words that best describe him:
faith-filled, wise, and friendly.
As we bid farewell to Roy Lee, we celebrate a life beautifully lived
and a journey completed with grace. His spirit will continue to guide
and inspire us, and his memory will forever be etched in the hearts of
those who loved him. We take comfort in knowing that he has found
eternal peace and rejoice in the knowledge that his legacy will live
on through the lives he touched.
